As communicators we know the importance of appealing to emotions and this is Neerja Bhatia’s sweet spot. The author and emotional intelligence expert, told marcom professionals at the February 29 FCPRA breakfast event that no matter who we are the lens with which we view the world is colored by a dominant emotional need that drives our reactions. However, when well-managed, we can use emotion to transform our relationships, businesses, organizations and the community.
The topic alone struck a chord with many, sparking a lively and interactive discussion among attendees. Bhatia provided insight into what she suggests are the four Rs to harness the energy of emotions:
- Recognize: How is the situation impacting me?
- Realize: What underlying needs are causing resistance?
- Realign: How can I inspire myself into positive action?
- Reframe: What is another way to look at this?
Without question, it was a thought-provoking workshop. But don’t take it from me. As one attendee so aptly put it, “The presentation was quite insightful and invaluable to a group of stressed out workaholics!”
